Graduate Dramatic Media Experience
The MFA degree with an emphasis in dramatic media production draws from and combines the disciplines of theatre, dramatic media production, and computing. Designed primarily for students with undergraduate degrees in theatre but also open to students with a background in art, media or communications who wish to expand their experience to include both digital media and traditional performing arts disciplines. This is a three year program requiring 60 semester hours of course work beyond the BA degree.
Admission:
Admission is based on the following materials:
- An Application for Admission sent to the Graduate School.
Official GRE Scores (combined verbal and quantitative score
of at least 800 is expected) and official transcripts of all previous academic
work.
- The Applicant Information Sheet which is to be sent directly
to the Department of Drama and Theatre. To include:
- Three letters of recommendation to be sent under separate cover.
- A clear statement of objectives in pursuing this degree.
- A resume and production portfolio.
Assesment:
- A Proficiency Examination is administered at the end of
the first year. This exam consists of a presentation to the Media Production
Specialty Board of a portfolio illustrating the work accomplished during the
first year of residence, accompanied by a professional resume.
- A Comprehensive Examination is administered at the beginning
of the second year. This is a three hour written exam designed to assess knowledge
of the history, theory, and criticism of dramatic media production.
- Normally a Thesis Project is completed in the third year:
The creative project consists of an animation, a video or 16mm film, an interactive
CD-ROM or other significant digital creative project; or significant design
or production work in a major departmental production. The thesis project
will be described and analyzed in an accompanying written document.
