by Stephen Adly Guirgis. Nothing brings people together like a dead nun’s stolen body. At least, not according to this dark and searing comedy by playwright Stephen Guirgis, called by New York Magazine “the best playwright in America under forty.” As twelve NYC neighbors await the return of their beloved Sister Rose’s body, their humorous and heartrending stories collide with unexpected – and inevitably touching – results.

THE GRAPES OF WRATH

Where: Seney Stovall Chapel

by John Steinbeck; adapated by Frank Galati. This powerful and deeply affecting stage version of one of the masterpieces of American literature holds to the simplicity and directness of the original novel. Despite the anguish and suffering which it depicts, the play becomes in the final essence a soaring and deeply moving affirmation of the indomitability of the human spirit, a message as needed today as it was in the days of the Great Depression.

EURYDICE
When: Nov 5-6, 10-13 @ 8:00 pm Nov 8, 15 @ 2:30 pm
Where: Cellar Theatre - Fine Arts Building

by Sarah Ruhl. Called “rhapsodically beautiful” by the New York Times, Eurydice re-imagines the classic myth of Orpheus through the eyes of its heroine. A luminously dream-like and fresh journey through the struggles of memory, loss, and love beyond the grave.

THE SHAPE OF THINGS
When: Jan 26-31 @ 8:00 pm Jan 31 @ 2:30 pm
Where: Cellar Theatre - Fine Arts Building

by Neil LaBute. When Adam, a shy, awkward college student, meets the confident and beautiful artist Evelyn, he soon finds himself out of his depth in a passionate affair. Evelyn just has a few suggestions about how to “improve” Adam. How far would you go for love? For art? In true LaBute fashion, the shocking, disturbing climax of Adam and Evelyn’s relationship challenges our most entrenched ideas about “the shape of things.”

ROMEO AND JULIET
When: Feb 18-20, 24-27 @ 8:00 pm Feb 28 @ 2:30 pm
Where: Seney Stovall Chapel

by William Shakespeare. This timeless, tragic tale of star-crossed lovers and feuding families contains some of the most beautiful poetry of history’s most famous and revered playwright. Whether you’re a novice of Shakespeare or a veteran, or just want to be reminded of and inspired by the importance of love, this classic promises to unite audiences with its enchantment.

THE REZ SISTERS
When: Mar 23-28 @ 8:00 pm Mar 28 @ 2:30 pm

by Tomson Highway. It’s not just bingo. It’s THE BIGGEST BINGO IN THE WORLD as seven women from a reserve compete for the chance to escape their tortured life. Hilarious, shocking, mystical and powerful, this award-winning play clearly establishes the creative voice of Native theatre and writing in North America today.

SPUNK

Where: The Morton Theatre in downtown Athens

three tales by Zora Neale Hurston; adapted by George C. Wolfe; music by Chic Street Man. In celebration of the historic Morton Theatre’s centennial, University Theatre brings you a new musical, adapted for the stage from three short stories by Zora Neale Hurston with music by Chic Street Man. George C. Wolfe has taken three pre-World War II vignettes of African-American life, filtered through Hurston’s black, ornery and feminist sensibility, and translated them into jazz and blues. Don’t miss this stylish, critically acclaimed collaboration.
