Do I have to get advised every semester? YES. Undergrads contact their advisor to schedule appointment, and grad students contact their major professor. You will not be cleared to register if you do not meet with your advisor, who clears the advising hold. Theatre and Film Studies majors will make an advising appointment through SAGE. Students under 60 credit hours will see their Franklin advisor; students who have more than 60 credit hours will be advised by Dina Canup (Fine Arts 302). DOUBLE MAJORING? You'll need two advising appointments, one for each major. Don't just rely on your other advisor, who cannot adequately advise for film studies or theatre if they aren't an official advisor or faculty advisor with our program. GRAD STUDENTS: you and your major professor should discuss which classes you should take, including THEA 7005 or 9005 (for MFA and PhD TA’s), and which ones may require individualized course creation or POD. If you are doing an independent study or project with a professor, that professor should initiate the course creation process (described below). If a course needs a POD (please check the bulletin first to be sure it actually needs one), ask the instructor of record for permission (process described below). You'll want to check out the silver bullet courses list they include in this (they update it each semester, so their page will have the most current version), as it can show you courses that fulfill multiple requirements. If you've ever wondered if there are courses that fulfill cultural diversity, Franklin multicultural, Franklin lit, area IV, and area VI for theatre or film studies -- all in one course -- the answer is yes and you'll find them there. When do I need to get advised? In general, in late September/October for spring/summer and late February/March for fall. Plan ahead! Many advisors/professors cannot do last-minute advising. Grad students: please get advised by your major professor before the end of the semester. Do not wait until right before classes start. When do I register? Once you are cleared by your advisor/major professor, you should get an email from Athena with your registration time. However, general dates can be found on the registrar’s website.
