The major in Film Studies provides an in-depth study of cinema as as an art form including the history, criticism, and theory of film along with hands-on opportunities in classes including production, directing for cinema, digital effects, writing, and animation. Film Studies explores the medium's aesthetic, technological, economic, and cultural aspects through a wide range of topics, including some interdisciplinary courses with other departments.

The film studies major combines well with a many other majors including entertainment and media studies, theatre, business, English, communications, French, journalism, and many more. Film Studies majors often earn double majors while graduating within the usual four year timeframe. They also pursue a wide variety of minors and/or certificates including film and media scoring, new media, and music business. Film studies students may intern in the field, study abroad through programs like the Cannes Film Festival, collaborate with others on student short film projects, get involved in student groups, take Georgia Film Academy courses at Athena Studios, and more.
