Assistant Professor, Lighting Design

Alex Mason (he/him) is lighting designer and associate for musical theatre, opera, drama, dance, and installation art. His professional work explores strong lines, vibrant colors, novel angles, and innovative applications of technology to create immersive, accessible artworks that engage a wide variety of audiences. 

Recent credits include productions of The Rite of Spring, Into the Woods, Die Walküre, Le Nozze di Figaro, Pippin, and The Barber of Seville with institutions ranging from the opera companies of Cincinnati, San Jose, and Omaha to the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Recent collaborators include James Robinson (director), Lori Stallings (choreographer), and Thomas C. Hase (lighting designer). 

Mason is Assistant Professor of Lighting Design in the Department of Theatre and Film at the University of Georgia, where he oversees graduate lighting designers and teaches courses in design, technology, drafting, and artistic collaboration. 

He holds degrees in lighting design and music from The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (MFA) and James Madison University (BMus).
